A Glimpse into the Life of YouTuber, Liv B
Last month our Nora Girls writer, Emma Chapple, caught up with YouTuber star Liv B.
I meet with Olivia Biermann on a hot morning in Halifax. I suggested we meet at a
tried-and- true vegan-friendly café – nothing less for a vegan YouTuber – but she
suggests a smaller coffee shop a couple of blocks away.
I’m surprised by her choice of venue. I had her pegged as a herbal tea kind of person.
Turns out my surprise is warranted.
“This is actually the first time I’ve ordered a coffee,” she says.
We grab our iced coffees and veggie samosas and head to the patio for a
conversation about life, food and Nora Swimwear.
Full disclosure: I’ve known Olivia since elementary school. But it’s only in the past
year or so that I’ve seen her YouTube channel blow up before my eyes. Suddenly I
have coworkers who tell me how much they love her videos. I see her get recognized
when we go out for (vegan) apps.
If you haven’t picked up already, Olivia is a vegan. Her YouTube channel, and by
extension her Instagram, is largely devoted to her vegan food creations.
She has over 550,000 subscribers on YouTube, and 80,000 followers on Instagram.
In an age of carefully curated brands, Olivia says starting a channel was a snap decision.
“It looked like fun,” she says. “So I started making [videos] in my free time.”
Making money or getting sponsorship was never the end goal. She admits she was
just a girl doing what she loves, only in front of a camera.
Once known as Liv’s Healthy Life, she had recently changed the name to simply Liv
I asked her what prompted the change. She says when she started out she didn’t
think much of choosing a name, and certainly didn’t imagine it getting as big as it
“At the time it kind of fit.”
As her channel grew, she decided the name might be too restrictive or give new
viewers the wrong idea. It also leaves open the possibility of more, non-food related
topics like on her second channel, More Liv B.
“Also, I was tired of having arguments with people in my comments about what
Which leads into my next question: does she still read the comments? The answer is
yes and no.
“When I first post [a video] I do,” she says. “Because the people who watch it first are
always people who like you. They’re always so supportive and leave the sweetest
I ask her what is the weirdest comment she’s ever read. She says it came when she
had her hair highlighted blonde.
“’Why did you dye your hair? It looks grey, you look so old, you look like you’re 30,’”
she pauses. “First of all, 30 is not old. Second of all, it’s blonde.”
Veganism has always brought with it a kind of ridicule - as one Ron Swanson said, “I
don’t eat the food my food eats.” Olivia knows there are many misconceptions
surrounding a vegan way of life, and the people who choose to live one.
“Being vegan doesn’t automatically make you a supermodel,” she says to anybody
who thinks vegans are always of the Hollywood variety. “People are obviously just
really uneducated and judgemental.”
The topic switches to swimwear. She says her favourite Nora looks are the Kaia and
the Tallulah. And fittingly, her dream vacation destinations are beaches in Australia,
Greece and Spain.
To her, being confident in a bikini is all about mindset.
“It’s about accepting your body as it is and saying, ‘I’m just going to have fun today.’”
