As a central value to Nora Swimwear, the blog will be used weekly to feature and celebrate women who are doing something they are proud of.
This week is Alicia, who is motivating women to live a healthier and happier life.
Tell us about yourself!
I am a Beachbody health and fitness coach, and co founded Alda Health & Fitness with my little sister. I coach a team of girls to understand how health and fitness benefits us in all aspects of our lives. We especially focus on how it helps mentally.
What made you want to start Alda?
We came up with the idea of starting Alda back in January. We had both recently competed in a fitness competition and it had taken a great toll on us emotionally. We had been on a strict diet all summer, and once the show finished we didn't really know how to eat anymore. I remember not only eating everything in sight for months, but always having to have some food on my fork, like I mentally felt I always needed to be eating. We thought, hey a lot of people probably feel this way, especially after the holidays, let's do something to keep each other motivated. And Alda began.
What is your fave method of motivation?
Other women. Seeing women work hard, kick ass, and reach their goals (in any aspect of life) motivates me to not only get my work done each day, but to be a better person. I also read a lot of personal development books, and meditate each morning before starting my day.
How do you help people reach their goals?
We run online bootcamps each month where we all stick to a workout schedule and pair it with a wholesome meal plan. We teach our girls that eating healthy doesn't have to be a bad thing, we share recipes to make healthier alternatives to popular meals and treats. It's about feeling good and confident in your body, we really loved the idea of women empowering other women, which is why we gear Alda towards females. We have helped girls lose weight, gain muscle, allowed them to keep up with their kids. But have also helped girls quit drinking, cut back on pain killers, and motivated some to keep getting up in the morning.
What do you believe is the most important thing to maintain a healthy lifestyle?
Meal prepping! Hand down. It sounds annoying and time consuming at first, but it ends up saving so much time each night and morning. I for one get seriously "hangry" and will eat whatever I can if I get to this state. If you have something already planned, chances are you'll eat that and won't feel as tempted with buying lunch, or eating chips while your food cooks. We meal prep twice a week and will cook up two different proteins (which can be frozen), cut up some veggies and fruit, and cook up some rice or brown rice pasta.
What is your fave workout?
Good question! There aren't really any workouts I truly dislike, but I started up skipping a few weeks ago and love it! It's such a great workout and is so underrated, nobody ever thinks of it! I like to do warm ups with it, I'll do one minute fast skipping, 30 second slow skipping for ten minutes. It hurts! I'm fairly confident with my cardio game but this always leaves me gasping for breath. I'll follow that with ten burpees, because why not?😉
What is your fave healthy recipe?
I'm a huge sucker for treats, so I always love trying new recipes. I am obsessed with these Clean Cookie Dough Balls. I'll freeze them and grab some on the go! All you'll need is a food processor (a good blender should work).
6-$ pitted dates
2 tbsp all natural peanut butter
1/2 cup oat flour (process oats to make own flour)
3 tbsp coconut oil
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
Handful of organic dark chocolate chips
Process everything (except the chocolate chips). Add chocolate chips and form into cookie dough balls. Freeze for ten minutes and enjoy!
What advice would you give women looking to make a healthy change in their life?
Start slow, and understand everything takes time. I suggest working out in the morning. Even if you have to get up a little earlier. It's so much harder wanting to workout after a day of work. For nutrition, find clean recipes of meals you enjoy and don't be afraid to try new things. I buy a lot of my produce when it's on sale, and will often get frozen veggies because they're less expensive and go a long way. Don't think you need to break the bank to eat healthy, there are always ways around it, sometimes you just need to do some research for sales at different shops.
Tell us something about your self not many people know.
I actually have my science degree majoring in marine biology. I later received an advanced diploma in marine geomatics (mapping and surveying the ocean floor) and found out quickly through the school year that it wasn't for me. The thought of working on an offshore boat for months at a time without seeing my loved ones made me sick. It was actually during college I decided I wanted to pursue health and fitness. The school year was very stressful for me, and my mental health suffered greatly. The only thing that really got me though was fitness. I used to reward myself for finishing assignments with getting to look up recipes or go for a run. I was at the lowest time in my life, and fitness was what was saving me. Knowing this I knew it could really help anyone, especially those going through a rough time.
Fave Nora swim:
Tough question! I'm obsessed with both Stella and Luna. Stella for how confident and sexy I feel while wearing it, and Luna for its simplicity and cheeky bottoms!
Fave thing to pair with Nora swim:
Salt water, sand, and a good book!
