As a central value to Nora Swimwear, the blog will be used weekly to feature and celebrate women who are doing something they are proud of.
This week is Allie, who has turned her passion for art and fashion into an exciting career.
Tell me about yourself and what you do!
I am a fashion photographer, art fanatic & content creator! I own my own photography business that takes me around the world working with brands, designers and stores. I have recently joined forces with my cousin, Katie Bell for AKA DÉCOR – a brand that combines art, photography, poetry and design. We collaborate with stores and boutiques to come up with exclusive series made from original artwork.
What made you want to pursue being a ‘girlboss’?
I’ve always worked for myself, and going down an artistic path made this one of my only options. If I wanted to be successful I needed it to be in my own hands and be in complete control over what I did or didn’t accomplish.
What is your favorite thing about running your own company?
It’s fun! It doesn’t feel like working. When you’re working for someone else, for me, there is so much less gratification. When I make a to do list, and accomplish everything on it, I feel great and I know each thing big or small will benefit my business in some way. And I get to watch it come together.
What is the most challenging thing- and how can you give advice to on that to help others starting out?
The most challenging thing for me is gaining credibility and a strong portfolio. If you’re constantly working hard to make things happen, eventually they start happening on their own. That’s when you know you’re on to something.
What drives you?
Having an idea and making it real. When something goes from a casual conversation or a light sketch on paper, then, is followed through until it’s a finish product or into a retail space, is amazing. It drives me to think that you really are in control of your own life and especially your own business. You’re the boss!
What advice would you give others on getting themselves out there?
I never really tried to get any press, but when you’re doing cool things and gaining momentum, people start to notice that and become more and more interested. I’d say the best thing you can do for growing a business and gaining press is, be consistent. Keep people interested, post every day, keep the conversations going. If you go MIA for 2 months at a time, people will forget about you. Keep making yourself and your business known.
Do you believe it is important to empower other women?
Of course! When you’re surrounded by people who believe in you and your vision and are driven and have similar ambitious interests, the world is your oyster. Surround yourself with people who are your kind, and just watch the magic happen.
