What is Foxbrook?

Creating my own line of lip products has been a long-time dream of mine. The idea behind the line is to design lip colours inspired by the individual style of women I admired. These women then become the models for their very own lip colours. I named the company Foxbrook Lipstick after the road I grew up on in rural Nova Scotia. The company launched in August of 2016 and we currently carry liquid lipsticks, longwear lipsticks and lip glosses, with a holiday 2016 collection in the works now. All products are available online at www.fblipstick.com and also at Plush Aesthetics in New Glasgow, NS.

Tell us about the girl behind the brand

My name is Catherine Millen and I grew up in a small town in Nova Scotia. I’ve always had a passion for makeup artistry, and I spent four years working in cosmetics in Halifax, NS, and Edmonton, AB. This has led to some pretty cool experiences, such as working as a makeup artist for Western Canada Fashion Week and as a freelance body painter for several private functions in Edmonton. Since moving to Fredericton four years ago, makeup had become more of a passion than a career until making the decision to launch FBL. I’m also a new mom, with a seven month old baby boy! I’m definitely kept busy.

What is something you love about what you are doing with Foxbrook?

I find women are looking less and less to magazines to tell them what is fashionable or to define beauty and instead looking to their peers on social media, and I think that is so empowering and important. I love that FBL can shine a light on women who are killing it, whether that be through their fashion sense, lifestyle or career.

Describe to us the creative process you go through in creating a new product

I usually begin by asking the FBL model what colour palette she feels most comfortable and confident in, and then narrow it down from there. Between her style selections and my cosmetic experience, we’ll eventually agree on a colour that we both love!

Where do you see the brand in five years?

I’m proud to say that even at only 6 weeks old, the brand has already been picked up by a salon and I am in talks with another interested salon. I would love to have the products available in more salons as time goes on, where people will be able to touch and test the formula and fall in love with it for themselves. When I launched FBL I wanted to start small, so I began with my favorite cosmetic – lipstick. I would also love to eventually expand into a full cosmetic line.

What are some struggles you faced in the beginning ?

I think the biggest struggle for me so far has been time management. I think it’s so important in the cosmetic industry to stay on top of trends and to post on social media daily, especially for a new business. You really want to get the word out about who you are and what you have to offer, and with a 7 month old I sometimes have to just accept that I’m running on his schedule. I’ve started trying to schedule posts at night time for the following day and that has helped a lot.

What excites you besides make-up?

I’m a big Blue Jays fan, so if I have free time I usually spend it watching a ball game. I also grew up listening to country music and that will always be in my roots. Other than that, if I’m not with my son I’m usually in a bubble bath with a glass of wine, trying to relax!

What are some major trends you see happening this fall?

Neon lips are really hot on the runways this fall, but not everyone feels brave enough to wear bright lipsticks, so I think on the sidewalks we’ll see more of the slate greys and plum toned lips we saw last winter.

FAVOURITES:

Fav foxbrook shade for fall:

My favourite neutral lip is Luna — it’s a mix between grey and mauve and it works with every skintone. My favorite bold lip is Becca, an orange-red matte finish liquid lipstick.

Fav nora swim:

Stella, for sure. As a new mom who isn’t totally comfortable in a bikini yet, it’s very hard to find a one piece that still makes you look and feel sexy. Stella definitely does both.

Coffee or tea?

Coffee, coffee, coffee. Coffee.

Fav fall accessory:

Blanket scarves! So cozy
